This is the third time that Maple Elementary has been threatened with closure within the last 6-7 years.  I'm hoping it's not "third on a match" and more like "three's a charm!"   GCCS is also threatening to close Spring Hill.  I've been to enough "listening sessions" (where they do anything but!) to know that New Washington is under threat, as well.  I will speak at the next school board meeting (Tuesday, June 20th @ 7 pm at the Admin Bldg) on the "Value of Neighborhood Schools."   Please come support neighborhood schools!

See "Save Maple and Springhill Elementary School" and "Stop GCCS's Wasteful Spending" on FB to follow organization efforts. Big, fast, loud, assertive public pushback is needed.

If you sign up to speak (by noon Monday) be sure to mention that you are speaking to agenda item F-1, Jeffersonville Elementary Transition.  People who address agenda items speak before an action is taken.  Others speak at the end of the meeting when few are around to hear and no votes can be changed.

Here's an off the wall idea:

The Census Bureau is no longer using the building on 10th near Main.  Seems like that might be a good location for a school.  Don't know if this is even possible, but could the city buy the building from the Federal Government, and then make some kind of trade with the school district, where the district would get the 10th street property to convert into a school and the city would get the Maple and Spring Hill properties to use as community centers or whatever.

There was a great turnout tonight and a lot of great speakers.  My favorite was the report card for GCCS schools.  Maple and Spring Hill are at the top!

Very proud of the community.  Very respectful.  Very factual.  Very persuasive.

Dr. Melin allegedly will make his recommendation on this issue at their next board meeting to be held on Wednesday, July 5th at 7 PM.  Not sure what the hurry is since they cannot ask for more money until next spring.  Instead of asking us for $15 million more to build another school, why not invest in the success that both Maple & Spring Hill have been accomplishing for years.  It'd be cheaper and the neighborhood kids will continue to progress at a rate higher than the state average.
