Do any of the chatter historians know the history of the intersection of Salem Church road and Hwy. 62?  There are 5 crosses on a hill overlooking the road.  I've googled and found an accident report from 2008 about a road worker being struck and killed at that intersection.  I'm just curious.  https://www.google.c...!7i13312!8i6656

Yes. Many years ago a young woman with 4 children in the car, I think 2 were her nieces, were killed there. There used to be a real blind spot there.

I witnessed the accident. Young woman driver with two young daughters and out-of-state niece. She was east-bound on 62, stopped at the junction, waiting to turn left onto Salem Church Rd. Pickup truck, also east-bound, flew down the hill behind her, rammed her car into the west-bound lane, where a semi ran right over the top of her car. First car behind the semi was a state policeman. There was no hope for the car's occupants. The pickup did a 360-degree rollover, ejected the driver, and came to rest upright. The driver suffered relatively minor injuries.

I hope to never again see anything so horrible.

This tragedy, was also a teaching point for me.  Never, never, turn your wheels in the direction you plan to turn, before turning.  The car had its wheels turned left, so when it was hit, from behind, the car went left into on coming traffic.  Had the wheels been straight, it probably would never had contact with the truck.

I knew the driver of the pickup and it left him with many emotional issues.

Was the driver of the pickup charged with anything?

Word! That's a rule that is too often overlooked. But I pounded it into every kid I've ever taught to drive.

I did not know that rule, but it makes sense.  Thanks for sharing!

Prior to 1999, for sure; probably 1997 or thereabouts.

This was long before the turning lane was added to that intersection as well.
