An invitation from Becka:

"Today is the Great Steamboat Race and if you are looking for an inexpensive meal while enjoying the event, stop at the Overlook on Riverside Drive at Spring Street for the Franklin Commons Neighborhood annual concession stand. We have grilled hot dogs/chili dogs, sweets, chips, popcorn and drinks served by your local neighbors. Yours truly is baking cookies as I post this."

We get some sort of permission to do this annually.

Also: this is an association event. I referenced Becka because I was lazily cutting and pasting her post and THIS yours truly certainly wasn't baking cookies and posting. Or baking cookies and doing anything else. Or baking cookies ever.

Baking issues.

And from what the friend who cleaned my oven told me, there are scary dust bunnies in there!

I'm not baking cookies!!!!!

If Becka has special ingredients, I'm trusting they're chocolate chips or something, not baked dust bunnies.

All the kinds.

No-bakes could be a slippery slope, a gateway dessert. I'm not risking it.

True, enough.  Kelley did not bake or no bake cookies, but she brought grandbabies and hubs who did their best to buy us out!

Thanks to all our neighbors & Chatter friends for supporting us!

Nobody cooks, but we all eat!

Which reminds me, I still have brownies.

I ujsed to take the kids down to the river in the 300 block of E. Riverside and we'd watch the boat race.  Since I am a river rat I always enjoyed anything to do with the boats that were entered..   Of course the Delta Queen was always my favorite.  We used to laugh at the Idlewild  snailing  up and down the river as tho it might win!    It never won except on a fluke where the Queen made a mistake or someone else did.   There was always a lot of folks watching and rooting their favorites.  Also, there were other boats from time to time that made it a three way race but as I remember the Queen usually won.

I always thought I would have loved to see a race between the Gordon Greene and the Delta Queen.  Both were paddle-wheelers but were of a different class so I don't know whether it would have been a fair race.

Was there a good turn-out yesterday?   I didn't bother to go as I can't get interested in either boat.  We road down Riverside to Ashland Park yesterday afternoon to see the boats......I had thought there were three boats racing this year.  After the Delta Queen had to stop cruising as far as I am concerned the current race is a waste of good time and money.   Then I got thinking that maybe the high water had  something to do with another boat showing up.   Does anyone know?  Certainly Louisville has enough clout to pay the boats to come to the only race of this kind in the country(I think?).

Also I didn't hear the calliopes playing this year.  The wind may not have been coming in the right direction for us to hear it here at our house.   A calliope (or two) playing on the river is as haunting as the pipes from across a field.   Can you tell where our family comes from?)

No, Shortcreek, I didn't hear the calliope either . . . or the cannon that starts the race, and I was right there!   The third boat was the Spirit of Jefferson.  With the cruise ticket sales, I wouldn't think any municipality would have to pay for this economic opportunity.

I thought the turn-out was down, which surprised me.  Even the walking bridge seemed light of traffic.

I miss the beautiful Delta Queen too!

I didn't hear calliopes. The crowd was thin. There were three boats.

The crowd wasn't thin down at King Fish, Buckhead, and Rocky's. I love the steamboat race.

The Belle was victorious, but there are ugly rumors that the race may have been fixed!
