Soccer Match-Fixing Scandal: A Look At How Organized Crime Corrupts The 'Beautiful Game'

AP | By SHEILA NORMAN-CULP
Match-fixing – where the outcome of a game is determined in advance – is used by gambling rings to make money off bets they know they will win. Matches also are rigged to propel a team into a higher-ranking division where it can earn more revenue.

FIFA has estimated that organized crime takes in as much as $15 billion a year by fixing matches.
In Italy alone, a recent rigging scandal is estimated to have produced $2.6 billion for the Camorra
and the Mafia crime syndicates, Eaton said.

'Centralized' plan needed to 'take care of their needs'
Published: 04/17/2015
President Obama’s White House Task Force on 'New Americans'
unveiled
its recommendations for a national strategy
to move millions of immigrants
into

“welcoming communities"
across the U.S.

The co-chair of the task force, Obama’s domestic policy adviser Cecilia Muñoz, said her focus is on making sure Obama’s historic immigration policies get “institutionalized”

so they will live on long after she and her boss

are gone from the White House.

Purdue kids dress in costumes and line up outside bars in the morning to get plastered. Almost none of them come off as cool. It's adorable.

Traffic cop killed both attackers at Mohammed exhibit in Texas
Jobin Panicker, WFAA-TV, and John Bacon
May 4, 2015

Police are looking into the background of two men who attacked a Muhammad exhibit on Sunday

GARLAND, Texas — Two Phoenix roommates armed with assault rifles and poised to storm an event featuring cartoons of the prophet Mohammed were fatally shot by a traffic cop who probably saved many lives, police said Monday.

One of the attackers had been convicted of terrorism-related charges in 2011 after telling an FBI informant he wanted to kill non-Muslims. Police spokesman Joe Harn said the officer who killed both attackers was a traffic officer who "did what he was trained to do."

Harn said, "Under the fire he was put under, he did a very good job and probably saved lives. We think their strategy was to get into the event center, but they were not able to get past the outer perimeter."

Court: Border search of businessman's laptop 'unreasonable'
May5, 2015
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal court
has ruled that the government's search
of a traveling businessman's laptop at the California border
was unreasonable and violated his privacy.
The search was unreasonable because

it "was supported by so little

suspicion of ongoing

or imminent

criminal activity" and "was so invasive of Kim's privacy," she wrote.

President

Barack Obama
and his predecessors

have maintained that people

crossing into U.S. territory aren't protected

by the Fourth Amendment against unreasonable search and seizure.

But it also means the government could, at least in theory,

target travelers for no reason other than

political advocacy, for example.

The American Civil Liberties Union

and similar groups have argued

that the policy has been used

to build criminal cases

against individuals

when the government can't obtain a warrant.

North country residents have mixed views on U.S. border patrol checkpoints
By SUSAN MENDE
TIMES STAFF WRITER
FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2015
North country residents have mixed views — and strong opinions — about the value of traffic checkpoints routinely set up by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents assigned to monitor the American side of the U.S.-Canadian border.

However, many also said they’re concerned that too many law enforcement officials — including border patrol agents — unlawfully stretch their authority by using aggressive tactics when interrogating law-abiding citizens traveling in their own country.

Last week, Jessica A. Cooke, 21, Ogdensburg, was pulled over at a border checkpoint in Waddington by border patrol agents who wanted to search her car’s trunk. During an altercation that followed, Ms. Cooke allegedly was subdued with a stun gun.

Nobody who pays attention thought the world of international soccer was squeaky clean. Bribes and kickbacks have been the stories that have swirled for years. But even so, the dramatic arrests in Switzerland last night of top officials of FIFA, soccer’s governing body, were startling. Big figures hustled out of a five-star hotel, indicted by the USA. Forty-seven counts. Racketeering, bribery, money laundering, fraud. A $150 million scandal alleged. And criminal proceedings opened on the World Cup hostings awarded to Russia and Qatar. This hour On Point: corruption and soccer.
