I was sports editor of the Hyphen (JHS student paper) my senior year and remember getting to write about a very successful time in Jeff High sports (also a few low spots). I haven't followed things close enough recently to have much of an opinion on the state of things, but I hope the ship is put back on the right track. Being a student at Jeff is a lot more fun when there are quality programs to watch and cheer for.

Even those not heavily into high school sports expect Jeff will have great sports teams, especially basketball.
Disappointing to hear of a slide.

JHS 1982

Im glad you brought up the swimming program, I know it runs well with lots of parents.

Could you answer me a few questions.

I know Pacesetters (swimming feeder) runs about 3 seasons a year using our Jeff facilities.

I believe they charge each kid around $700 a season.  Seems to be 50 or so kids in the program.

We are talking some big bucks.

1. Who is in charge of the money?  GCCS?  Jeff athletics?

2. Does Mr. Gast pay a rental fee like other coaches?

I am glad this program runs, seems similar to JYBL and I know they pay rental.

Again, proud of the program, just always wondered about the cash.

Lets see.......73-55 New Albany.

I will be at the game, if Jeff gets closer then this

I will call it a moral victory.

I will be in the top section close to the concession

stand.  Grab me a hot dog and say hi.

I will be wearing my Hickory High Letter Jacket.

So sleepy, did you get your hot dog?  I can say I'm proud of these boys for continuing to hustle.

I can also say that along with a new boys basketball coach, a new dance team coach should be hired.

Karen I have to hold back a lot from what I say because my son plays sports. These kids work very hard even those young ladies dancing. We need to look at the AD. I have no ties after June. But I love my Red Devils alumni. Thanks for supporting our boys tonight.

Yep, it's not the kids - they do work hard.  From the time I pulled in the parking lot tonight and seen that people were parking in the driving lane because the parking lot needs to be re-striped to all the little papers taped to the seats declaring them reserved.  I wonder how long it took to tape all those?  The school is in a mess right now and I hate it for the students and athletes.  I just hope these boys can survive this season with some self confidence.  I don't know anyone close to the program but am hoping that everyone sees this for what it is, lack of coaching ability.

As far as the dance team, the coach needs to make sure the outfits they wear are flattering for all team members.

What is the deal with Satterly?  Where is he from?  What experience does he have?  Who is he friends with?

Sleepy, it came 78-36.
A 42 point margin.
The broadcasters on the radio said it was the worst defeat
in the JHS-NAHS series
that has played 155 games.

AD Todd Satterly used to work at New Albany High School with Assistant Superintendent Travis Haire. AD Todd Satterly is a first cousin of school board member Kevin Sattlerly. Prior to becoming the AD, he was the assistant principal at Clarksville Middle School.

Coach Pait's defense is that they are playing really tough teams.

Well, duh.  Your job is to prepare these boys for such games.

Pait and staff need to go.  Satterly needs to go.  Julie Strait needs to go.

Satterly and Haire go way back.  NAHS days.

Was last night really the worst home loss in Johnson Arena History??

And No, I didn't get a free Hot Dog.

Sleepy, I've not sat on the Pacesetter board, so I don't know the exact #'s for everything. But I do know the club pays a fee for use of the pool. And the club has a bonded treasurer that oversees the budget / financial obligations of the club. It's a registered non-profit (503c?), so all fees collected go back into the club. I also know the club has purchased quite a bit of equipment over the years for the pool that the high school team (& possibly PE classes?) gets use of, as the JHS sports administration provided the HS team with VERY LITTLE money during my 8 yr. involvement with the HS team (4 yrs. as President of the parent booster club, 2 more as a board member at large). Additionally, the Pace team has to employ a large staff of coaches due to the different age groups & # of children involved. During a weekend USA Swimming sanctioned meet, these coaches will spend anywhere from 8 - 10 hours a day on the pool deck for Saturday & Sunday, + 2 - 3 hours on Friday's distance events. This doesn't include several hours of getting together meet entries the week prior to the meet, nor does it include the hours they spend at practice. Our coaches DO put their time in......precisely why we have an EXCELLENT program & STRONG high school program......LOTS of hard work goes into it by the swimmers, divers, parents, and coaches.

Hope this answers your questions somewhat. Sorry I don't have exact #'s, but I hope the explanation above explains how it's all set up.

Have a good'en, Sleepy!!

Another Top 10 Excuses list from the hoosierhillshoops.com basketball site:

Basketball coaching analysis.
It is time for some JHS humor.

"When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount."

"However, in school board and school administration circles
more advanced strategies are often employed, such as":

Top 10 Reasons for Keeping a Dead Horse
1. Making numerous excuses for the horse.

2. Giving the horse way too much extra time.

3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

4. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for the horse.

5. Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be kept.

6. Reclassifying the dead horse as just needing more time.

7. Hiring more/differrent assistants to help ride the dead horse.

8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.

9. Providing additional funding and/or training to try to increase
the dead horse's performance.

10. Continually providing redundant productivity excuses to try to redefine
the dead horse's
hopeless performance.
